Understanding Dentures
- Dentures are removable appliances used to replace missing teeth and the surrounding tissues. Designed to be both functional and lifelike, they also help maintain the structure of your facial features by supporting your lips and cheeks.
There are two primary types of dentures:
- Full Dentures: Recommended when all teeth in either the upper or lower jaw are missing. These rest on the gum tissue.
- Partial Dentures: Ideal when some natural teeth remain, using clasps or precision attachments to secure to adjacent teeth.
At Ferny Smiles Dental, we provide both acrylic and metal partial dentures. Acrylic options are typically more cost-effective, while metal frameworks are stronger, slimmer, and tend to offer a more comfortable long-term solution.
Your Denture Journey
Initial Consultation and Assessment
We’ll begin with a full examination and, if necessary, take digital X-rays to evaluate your gums, jawbone, and remaining teeth.
- Impressions
Detailed moulds of your mouth are taken to craft a denture that fits snugly and looks natural. - Wax Try-In
A prototype is created using wax, allowing us to assess comfort, bite, and appearance before making the final version. - Fitting the Final Denture
Your finished denture is manufactured in a local dental laboratory and carefully fitted for optimal comfort. - Aftercare and Adjustments
We’ll monitor your progress and make any small refinements necessary to help you feel confident and secure wearing your new dentures.
Why Consider Dentures?
Dentures are an accessible, effective treatment for replacing missing teeth. Key benefits include:
- Easier chewing and clearer speech
- Enhanced facial support and aesthetics
- Improved self-esteem
- Easy to remove for cleaning
- A cost-conscious alternative to bridges or implants
Adjusting to New Dentures
It’s common to experience a brief adjustment phase when first wearing dentures. You may notice:
- A sensation of fullness or bulk
- Minor speech difficulties
- Slight increase in saliva
- Mild discomfort or pressure spots
With regular use, most patients adjust within a few weeks. Our team is here to support you during this transition, and adjustments can be made to fine-tune the fit as needed.
Taking Care of Your Dentures
To extend the life of your dentures and maintain oral health, we suggest:
- Cleaning daily using a soft denture brush and non-abrasive cleaner (avoid regular toothpaste)
- Removing them at night to allow your gums to rest
- Storing them in a suitable denture-soaking solution overnight
- Continuing routine dental check-ups to monitor gum health and denture fit
We’ll provide individualised instructions based on your denture type and oral care habits.
